In-Stat Identifies the Three Critical Factors to GLOBALFOUNDRIES Long-Term Success

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., Sept. 11, 2009 – ATIC, the financial backer of GLOBALFOUNDRIES and AMD, acquired Chartered Semiconductor and will combine the two companies under GLOBALFOUNDRIES. Market research firm In-Stat (http://www.in-stat.com) believes this marks a huge step for the young GLOBALFOUNDRIES and a major shift in the semiconductor foundry industry.

This transaction delivers the third of the three critical factors that In-Stat believes is vital to GLOBALFOUNDRIES’ long-term success – gaining a significant customer, breaking ground on new capacity, and joining the Common Platform manufacturing alliance.

  • Critical factor #1: GLOBALFOUNDRIES has already announced that STMicroelectronics will be working with the company for wireless devices.
  • Critical factor #2: The company has broken ground on new capacity at the same time it builds out capacity at Fab 1 (formerly Fabs 36 & 38).
  • Critical factor #3: Gaining Chartered Semiconductor gives the company formal entrée to the Common Platform alliance, which it was already loosely linked to through its relationships with IBM. This does assume that the transaction doesn’t nullify the alliance or any contractual obligations, but we do not believe that it will because it actually adds more value to the Common Platform as an alternative to TSMC, the world’s foundry powerhouse.

What is most impressive is that GLOBALFOUNDRIES accomplished all three of these tasks in less than a year, far quicker than In-Stat had predicted.
