A byte is a unit of digital information that consists of a sequence of 8 bits, (binary digits) processed as a single unit of information. For example, ‘a’ is a character which is made up of one byte.

The units of bytes and its multiples are used globally for data storage – Megabyte, Gigabyte and Terabyte are all units of digital information and shows how much information can be stored on a device. An image of really good quality takes up a few kilobytes whereas a high definition movie tends to be more than 1megabyte.

Kilobyte

A kilobyte, KB is equivalent to 1024 bytes although you would see this as 1000 bytes on some sites, It should be noted that tech-inclined people insist that the measure from one unit to the other is 1024, and not 1000. However, for simplicity, 1000 is used. One Kilobyte can make up for two to three paragraphs of text.

Megabyte

A megabyte which uses the symbol MB is equal to 1,024 kilobytes which are approximately 1,048,576 bytes. Megabytes are used mostly in storing data depending on file sizes, as well as for storage devices such as flash drives. It is also used in storing videos, pictures and audio. An audio file of about 5 minutes or a 10 million pixel image from a digital camera would take just a few megabytes. However, of recent, storage devices are larger, often involving either gigabyte or terabytes of data.

Gigabyte

A gigabyte which uses the symbol GB is equal to 1,048,576 kilobytes or 1,024 megabytes. GB is used mostly for indicating the size of memory. A computer might have 4 GB of RAM. A flash memory card used in a camera might store 16 GB worth of pictures. A gigabyte of data is often referred to as a gig worth of data.

Terabyte

A terabyte (TB) is a digital information measurement unit which is going to be extensively used in the nearest future for measuring the size of computer RAM, etc. but is used now for measuring the amount of digital information in online libraries, digital archives, and so on. It is the current heavyweight of all data storage. One terabyte (TB) is about 1,024 gigabytes or roughly 1 trillion bytes. Today, it is no longer an exotic term. You can buy 4 TB hard drives, showing that the time is near when this term would be used commonly.

There are other non-popular multiples of bytes, we have the Petabyte(PB), Exabyte(EB), Zettabyte(ZB) and the Yottabyte.

How to Convert Megabyte to Gigabyte

1 MB = 0.0009765625 GB
1 GB = 1024 MB
Therefore, to convert 15 MB to GB:
15 MB = 15 × 0.0009765625 GB = 0.0146484375 GB
Converting memory manually is an easy method. To convert MB to GB, simply divide the MB by 1024 and to go back from GB to MB, multiply the GB by 1024. The process of converting from megabytes to gigabytes is the same for all units of memory. To move up one unit in the scale ( to a larger unit, like going from KB to MB ) – – divide. To move down ( like going from KB to bytes ), multiply. The magic number is 1024.

How to convert Terabytes to Gigabyte

A terabyte is equal to 1024 Gigabytes.
1 GB = 10-3 TB in base 10 (SI).
One Gigabyte is equal to 0.0009765625 terabytes(binary).
There are 1000 gigabytes in 1 terabyte. To convert from terabytes to gigabytes, multiply your figure by 1000 (or divide by 0.001).
There are 0.001 terabytes in 1 gigabyte. To convert from gigabytes to terabytes, multiply your figure by 0.001 (or divide by 1000).

Differences and Similarities between MB and GB

1. Both the megabyte and gigabyte are multiple units of byte used for digital storage and transmission, the only difference is in the number of bytes they carry.
2. A megabyte contains one million bytes whilst a gigabyte contains a billion bytes.
4. The Megabyte and Gigabyte both follow the International System of Units (SI) definitions.
5. The Megabyte and Gigabyte also use the binary definitions depending on how they are used.
6. Most hard drive capacities are measured in GB which is the larger unit of the two.

Difference and Similarities between GB and TB

1. The unit symbol for Gigabyte is GB, Terabyte unit symbol is TB.
2. A terabyte is greater than Gigabyte.
3. Gigabyte has the prefix Giga. TB has the prefix, Tera.
4. A terabyte is 1024 times bigger than Gigabyte.
